EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street newbie Emrhys Cooper has lifted the lid on his family’s connection to a chilling cult as his character takes a dark turn on the famous cobbles
Emrhys Cooper, a newbie to Coronation Street, has shared his terrifying experience in a cult.
The former cast member of Desperate Housewives made his debut as Rowan Cunliffe to ITV viewers last month when Leanne Battersy went with Simon Barlow to one of his lectures at the Chariot Square Hotel. When “The Institute’s” group mentor approached the blonde bombshell, she was shocked.
As she battled with Simon’s recent binge drinking and the ensuing conflict between her and her fiancé Nick Tilsley, the endearing hunk gave her some unsolicited advise. Rowan quickly gained her trust by encouraging her to confide in him about her deepest feelings and thoughts during this trying period.
The devoted mother gradually began implementing the cult’s teachings at home as she grew more and more absorbed in it. Nick proposed to Leanne on Valentine’s Day, but they recently talked about their relationship and decided to take things slowly with the wedding.

And in later scenes, her role in the community is expected to increase. Fans might not be aware, but Emrhys is all too familiar with the realities of cult tactics. The actor disclosed that his parents, Christopher and Raphela, have participated in a number of holistic organizations throughout the years in an interview with Daily Star and other media.
The actor remembers growing up in his hometown and the emergence of systematic gangs. “My parents met a lot of Rowan types over the years,” he said, “growing up in Totnes, Devon, a very new-age town and a breading hub of gurus and holistic doctors.”
“I didn’t really understand it growing up, but as I got older and saw some of the dangers of these types of characters firsthand, I still find it extremely upsetting that my mother’s health was seriously impacted by some dangerous advice she received.”

He continued by revealing how, following her diagnosis of high blood pressure, his mother had received some unsettling medical advice. The soap opera actress went on, “My mother had a prescription for high blood pressure, but a holistic doctor told her he could get off the prescription with herbal remedies. There have been multiple instances [over the years] of this happening.”
“But she assured us she would resume taking the medicine even after having a mild heart attack. Sadly, she didn’t, and she hoarded the medication. She then suffered a very serious stroke four years ago, leaving her paralyzed and living in a nursing facility.
The handsome man continued by revealing how his personality is comparable to some of the role models his parents were when they were younger. “But one of the things that happened that is similar to my storyline [on Corrie] is that my parents did end up in a cult, but it was more of a wellness and fitness cult, as Emrhys went on to say.”

The cult quickly developed a sexual undertone, and the longer members of the organization were involved, the more dangerous the group got. “It only became more sinister as they got further in and gave more money,” he continued.
By engaging in these fairly suggestive activities with other individuals, the cult attempted to drive my parents apart. They realized that the fitness regimen wasn’t as beneficial as it seemed.
“After my dad brought it up, the head master ejected him, and my mother left right away. They have gone in and out of various things, but they came out comparatively undamaged.
“They are intelligent individuals who always enjoy exploring different options, but regrettably, they have a very open heart and have frequently been taken advantage of.” The actor continued by telling his supporters that his family is pleased with him for accepting such a difficult assignment.

“They’re all really excited, more about this role than any other role I’ve played,” he exclaimed. When I originally aired, my dad was alerting all of his friends, and they were throwing a small screening party.
“My sister is giddy with excitement over the news, and my mother, who is in a nursing home, is also very excited,” If sharing some of my own experiences serves to alert and inform people about the possible dangers [of cults], they will gladly welcome it.
He cautioned, “Truth is often stranger than fiction.” To find out if his character takes a dark turn, fans will have to keep watching.
